Dr. Boonrat is an Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at Chulalongkorn University. Dr. Boonrat held numerous advisory positions and executive positions such as: Committee Boards of the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Director of Biomedical Engineering Research Center, Director of Chulalongkorn University Technology Center (UTC) MedTech division, Assistant Dean in Research, and Deputy Head of Department. He also advises various companies in the electronic, automotive, biomedical and jewelry industries. He has completed more than 30 research projects with industrial partners such as Western Digital, Pandora, Toyota, Mattel, Thaioil, IRPC, PTT, etc. He has received numerous awards including Thailand Young Metallurgist award (2013) and Thailand Young Technologist award from Princess Mahachakkri Sirindhorn (2012). Other accolades included Research Awards (2014, 2015), and Innovation Award (2007) from the Santa Fe Symposium for jewelry manufacturing technology. He has pioneered the 3D printing of biomedical titanium for orthopedic, plastic surgery and neuro-surgery applications. As the devices are fully customized patient-specific, the outcomes of 370+ clinical cases have shown this technology as a promising pathway to make impacts. The TFDA approval and commercialization of research gave birth to Meticuly, a spin-off company that focuses on the platform to create on-demand devices for leading medical professors from medical schools in Thailand and South East Asia. Conformed with Thai FDA and EN ISO13485, many products are currently in commercial stage helping patients in Thailand. As of 2020, several products are now submitted for USFDA 510(k). Working closely with surgeons in the fields of orthopedic, neuro surgery and plastic surgery, fully anatomical devices may restore full range of motions and expedited recovery. The drop-in solution allows for minimally-invasive incision and short surgical theater time. Meticuly recently received the following awards: First Place of the Digital Venture Accelerator batch 1 (2017), and First Place at the 5th Seedstars Global Summit (2018)’s pitch corner.

DAVID MICHAEL PAYNE

David Michael Payne received his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas (B.S., Biology & Biochemistry; Ph.D., Molecular Biology & Biochemistry).  He then completed five years of postdoctoral training at the Cancer Center, University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine.  As a senior postdoc/assistant professor at UVA, Michael led the research team that discovered the identity of pp42 as MAP kinase and the mechanism for its regulated activation in mammalian signal transduction.  He also led another research team that discovered a mechanism for malignant transformation of cells by the src-oncogene tyrosine kinase, involving novel “unscheduled” phosphorylation and activation of growth factor receptors (i.e., activation of receptor signaling in the absence of growth factor binding to receptors).  During his career in the USA, Michael was a faculty member at four major universities plus the National Institutes of Health.  He established a record of excellence in teaching and mentoring students, competed successfully at the national level for grant funding (National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and American Cancer Society), and published consistently in the top 10% of peer-reviewed journals in molecular/cell biology and biochemistry.  He has been an international faculty member here at MDCU since 2015 (Feb), originally helping the director (Dr. Trairak Pisitkun) of the new CU Center of Excellence in Systems Biology to develop and lead that state-of-the-art biotechnology research facility (2015–2018).  Since then, Michael has been leading an international collaboration in a translational research project to develop a ‘Next-Gen’ immunotherapy for treatment of snakebite envenoming (which creates more than 2 million victims annually, resulting in more than 400,000 disabilities and 100,000 deaths every year).

His scholarly clinical endeavor centers on the innovative diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic modalities for numerous digestive diseases, particularly on acute pancreatitis, obesity medicine, and gastric per-oral endoscopic pyloromyotomy (GPOEM), a novel endoscopic procedure to treat gastroparesis. He has published in many leading tier 1 journals in the field. His ongoing randomized controlled trials include studies on novel therapies for severe pancreatitis, preventive measures to reduce post-ERCP pancreatitis, and peroral endoscopic myotomy for achalasia. Conceptualizing project will focus on AI in Gastroenterology, Medical education on simulator-based endoscopy training, and bariatric endoscopy.

His clinical research focused on surgical anatomy, novel surgical techniques, biomechanics study and geriatric trauma. He also achieved Ph.D. in biomedical engineering and currently performing various researches in collaboration with faculty of engineer, Faculty of pharmacy and Biochemistry departments. His non-clinical research focused on medical instrument invention, biomaterials, infection control modalities, 3D printing in medicine and controlled release medication.

Dr.Nattawan holds a MSc in audiovestibular medicine with honour from University College London Ear Institute. Her MSc work focused on developing a hearing screening programme for the subacute stroke unit at the National Neurology and Neurosurgery Hospital (NHNN), Queen Square in London, where she also held a research fellow post.

She later continued her PhD in Neuroaudiology and Audiovestibular medicine, focusing on cognitive evaluation of hearing-impaired older adults. Her PhD was part of the project for hearing stimulation among the mild cognitive impairment population to prevent dementia. After her PhD, Dr.Nattawan holds an honorary senior fellow post at UCL Ear institute. She supervises post-graduate students from UCL and (undergrad/postgrad) from Chulalongkorn university. She currently holds several international fundings from the European Union Federation (Horizon Europe), The Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), The British Council (UK). She is also selected by the Thai and UK governments for the Thai-UK world class university consortium to support Chulalongkorn university in academic and research collaboration with the UK.

Dr. Sipat Triukose is a member of Chulalongkorn University Big Data Analytics and IoT Center (CUBIC) and a research group on Applied Digital Technology for Medicine (ATM). He is also a member of the Thai Red Cross education and research committee. Early in the career, his areas of interest revolve around performance measurement and evaluation of a large-scale system, such as the Internet and web, content distribution network, computer network, and social network. He later expanded his interest toward big data analytics, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence applications in several fields of study, especially in medical research and the healthcare system. In 2018, he co-founded TrueEye.AI, a medical technology startup focusing on utilizing medical research and deep technology to create a preventive and non-invasive medical solution. Dr. Sipat Triukose received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University (USA). Before joining Chulalongkorn University, he worked for National ICT Australia or NICTA (transformed to Data61 in 2016) in Sydney, Australia.

Trairak Pisitkun is a physician-scientist who is now directing a biomedical research team at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. He is also a volunteer scientist at the National Institutes of Health, USA. His interest is in applying systems biology approaches using multi-omics technologies, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and advanced antibody technology to address unmet needs in clinical medicine, especially in the cutting-edge treatment of cancer and autoimmune disease. Currently, he is developing a personalized cancer vaccine and therapeutic monoclonal antibodies for cancer immunotherapy and implementing technologies that can practically deliver precision medicine for the Thai population.

Dr. Sirin Nitinawarat obtained the B.S.E.E. degree from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, with first class honors, and the M.S.E.E. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. He was a postdoctoral research associate at the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. He then had a career in the industry working as a senior systems engineer at Qualcomm Technologies, San Diego, California, USA, where he helped invented network technologies for cutting-edge smartphones for three years. After which he returned to Thailand as a lecturer at the International School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. His research interests are in bio and genetic engineering, data science, digital transformations, preventive medicine, public health, health and wellness, and telemedicine.

SOMPONG VONGPUNSAWAD

Sompong Vongpunsawad, Ph.D., studies viruses that cause respiratory and enteric diseases in adults and young children. These viruses are often transmitted rapidly and cause wide-ranging symptoms. Vaccination against measles, influenza, and rotavirus have greatly reduced these diseases, but infections by enteroviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and norovirus remain of concern. The lab’s expertise focuses on the rapid detection of virus infection in patients, surveillance of disease outbreaks in the community, and identification of novel viral variants of clinical importance. Accurate and timely diagnosis of viral infection using molecular/immunological assays will significantly improve patient care and help develop better vaccines and therapies.

Dr Einapak Boontaveeyuwat qualified in Medicine at the Chulalongkorn University which was also where she received her M.D. in 2005. After general medical training in Nakhonratchasima (2006-2009) and a period of research in Siriraj Hospital in clinical treatment innovations including radio frequency (2008-2009), she undertook dermatology training in Siriraj Hospital where she developed an interest in photodermatology (2009-2013). She therefore went on to complete a clinical fellowship in Photobiology with Professor Pravit Asawanonda at the Division of Dermatology, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Chulalongkorn University, Thailand where she has started an appointment as Consultant Dermatologist and also Clinical Lecturer since November 2015. After another period of clinical research and practice in photodermatoses, photodiagnosis and phototherapy in Photodermatology unit, St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s Hospital, London, UK (2015-2018), she has resumed her current appointment as Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Lecturer at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University since November 2018. Dr Boontaveeyuwat has clinical and research interests in photosensitivity diseases particularly in xeroderma pigmentosum, porphyrias and actinic prurigo, photodiagnosis, phototherapy including heliotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Dr Boontaveeyuwat has been ambitiously working on Sunrise Phototherapy Network by King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital which will offer all the areas in Thailand our exquisite expert services under tele-consultation, RECKON clinic along with safe guided natural sunlight treatments, Self-Heliotherapy in TH (SHOT), Daylight-Photodynamic therapy (Daylight-PDT), and our invented home light based devices (Home PhoD).

She also continued for a brief postdoctoral training on the same research focus of spermatogonial stem cell and infertility. The ongoing research project includes fertility preservation in transwomen. We will explore the need, expectations and perspectives of transwomen towards fertility preservation procedures. Student will also have a chance to examine mechanisms of infertility to determine appropriate fertility preservation measures for transwomen.

His clinical interests are hip, knee and shoulder conditions included tendon tear, joint instability, traumatic injury, degenerative change and replacement surgery. Common diseases found in his clinic are rotator cuff tear, ACL injury, meniscus injury, shoulder instability and activity-related musculoskeletal pain. He is now working on many research projects and creates many surgical techniques for arthroscopic surgery. He is also working on a Ph.D project at at the department of biomedical engineering, Chulalongkorn university.

His areas of research interests include innovation development and applied digital and deep-tech research (i.e. AI, Data Science, Robotics, Automation, or IoT) for business applications such as health, medical, manufacturing, construction, etc.

Dr. Ronpichai Chokesuwattanaskul is a cardiac electrophysiologist, arrhythmia doctor, who is eager in the concept of collaboration and team players philosophy to generate innovation for community. HIs primary interest area is general cardiology, EKG, invasive procedures, AI, data science, bioinformatics, and data management. Other than clinical interest and teaching experiences, his works have been published in prestige journals, on average 10 publications per year in the past few years in addition to an extensive collaboration with faculties outside hospital including ivy league universities. He also plays role as academic editor of PLOS ONE journal.

I am a board-certified surgical and molecular pathologist with a dream of making genomic testing more widely available in Thailand for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes. I did my training in the US (Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area) and have previously done both quality improvement projects and new test validation for labs. I believe that creating usable infrastructure and good systems is a foundation of medical care.

Have you ever imagined being your own personal doctor and managing your own health sitting in front of a TV at home? Testing that once seemed risky out of the hands of medical professionals is now more than ever a touchable reality. The advancement of handheld technology has brought an explosion of personal health gadgets such as smart watches that can monitor heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and calories burned. High-speed internet advances have allowed for the efficient use of mobile phone applications, online consultant services, telemedicine, and even AI therapists. Some laboratory tests can even be ordered from home at the click of the button, with tool kits delivered and results available quickly online. 

Future prospects of healthcare are moving from being doctor-centered to the patient viewpoint. Disease treatments will also expand to lifestyle remedies and coaching and extend out from visits to the hospital to a 24/7 online service. We might see more data doctors, where personal information of patients is streamed through an online platform and managed by professionals behind screens in ‘Care Hubs.’ After analysis of the person’s health data, they can provide individualized consult to each person, and recommend fitness programs that utilize entertainment and games to increase compliance. Personal devices will have bio-sensors to detect critical vital signs like irregular heartbeats and will be able to immediately send alerts to their doctors for any signs of life threatening conditions. Healthcare will be accessible where ever as internet connectivity becomes more and more ubiquitous.
